Are all genders welcome to classes?
Absolutely! Everyone is welcome at Sophie Grace Academy of Ballet.
How do I know which class to enrol my child in?
Classes are informed by the age of the student. Please refer to the age requirements page for further information. Please contact us if you are unsure.
Do I need the Academy’s uniform for a trial class?
No, these can be purchased once enrolled. Please wear attire appropriate for moving in e.g. activewear or a tight-fitting t-shirt and leggings.
When will my child begin pointe work?
Students typically begin pointe work at age 11, or when they begin Intermediate Foundation. Pre-pointe sessions starting the year before pointe work are a fantastic tool for dancers to start strengthening their body well before going en pointe. No student is allowed to begin pointe work without their teacher or the director’s approval. It is encouraged students receive a pre-pointe assessment from a reputable physiotherapist before starting.
When is the best time of year to join?
Ideally, students aged from 5 years will enrol in Term 1 especially if they wish to undertake their RAD exams. Students interested in the tiny dancer’s program may join at the start of Term 1, 2 or 3.
Can anyone do private lessons?
Yes, any student enrolled at the Academy may apply to do private lessons. Private lesson are dependent on availability.
Can I talk to my teacher before or after my class?
Our classes run back-to-back, so to keep classes to schedule the best way to communicate with the teacher is via email.
Can parents watch classes?
Parents may only watch class in our end of term Viewing Week. Students new to the Tiny Dancer program may have their parent/guardian watch their first class to help with the transition and settle any nerves.
How do I sew ribbons on pointe shoes?
For any new students beginning pointe work, a pointe information session will be held for students and parents/guardians at the beginning of each year. This will go through looking after pointe shoes, improving longevity of shoes and sewing ribbons and elastics.
Does my child need to wear their hair in bun?
From Grade 1 all students are required to have their hair in a bun for class. If their hair is not long enough it must be in a neat ponytail to ensure their hair is not a distraction during class time.
